The first section of the course is meant to provide introductory notions about Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Symbolism. This segment of the course will discuss the most relevant artists, artworks and collections of the period utilising a feminist and decolonial perspective. 
The second section of the course is meant to provide introductory notions about avant-garde movements such as Expressionism, Futurism, Cubism, De Stijl, Constructivism, Suprematism, Dada, Surrealism. Origin of the term, main protagonists, international relationships and the importance of avant-garde for the developments in 20th century art will be discussed.

The 3rd section of the course is meant to provide introductory notions about the main topics of art in the second half of the 20th century, of its relationship with other arts, and with the general historical context. Movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Informel, Neo Dada, Pop Art, Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, Land art, Conceptual Art, and Transavanguardia will be discussed.

The exam encompasses a 1200 words analysis of three images (400 words each) assigned during the course: the analysis will have to demonstrate knowledge of historical contexualisation, familisarisation with most relevant artists, movements and style, and themes. The assignments will be evaluated on the criteria of clarity, critical analysis, use of references, sources, and literature.
