Interacting Christianity.
The ideas of "humanity" and "world" in the relations between Christian currents and other religious choices.
Programma inglese
Interacting Christianity.
The ideas of "humanity" and "world" in the relations between Christian currents and other religious choices.
The idea of a tripartite humanity among Pagans, Jews and Christians, occurring in Christian apologetics of the first centuries of the common era in order to defend the right to a peaceful coexistence with the other religions of the Empire, was later declined in various ways, depending on changing cultural and socio-political contexts: in the fourth century it will become the interpretative key of comparison between different religious choices (Jews, Pagans but also Heretics), until it is transformed in a distinction entirely within Christian society with the theory of the three ordines (Augustine, Gregory the Great), or even more in the three world-status interpretation of history by Johachim of Fiore. The representations of the variety of peoples and faiths and the social, cultural, religious interactions will get complicated in the encounter with the “Barbarians”, as well as in the relationship with either Islam or the different contexts in which Christianity has spread.
Obiettivi
The course is intended to provide a general preparation to the history of Christianity together with an overview on methodological and applicable aspects of the discipline, introducing students to a reading and critical understanding of the sources.
It deals with the topic of the ideas of "humanity" and "world" in the history of relations between Christian currents and other religious choices. This issue is particularly suitable to show the variability of fields of interest: the analysis of the documentation aims to enable the students to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language; besides, it develops autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines and cultural contexts.
