First Class
Our first class, today (and, likely, tomorrow) will introduce the subject matter of our course, self-constitution and its problems. We will see what can be meant by self-constituion, examine two examples of it, and begin to discuss why it can seem a compelling notion but at the same time a problematic one.
We will then discuss the contrasting notion, objectivity (in a broad sense and in a preliminary way), by sketching it in a naturalistic (Burge) and in a normative (Wittgenstein, Kripke) perspective. The problem of the possibility of error and its modal implications will emerge as crucial.
