Research Activities
Development of material culture between the Phoenician motherland and the central Mediterranean: Motya as a privileged observatory for the transmission of the Phoenician heritage in the West.
Since 2002 I am in charge of the study and publication of the ceramic materials from the excavations of the Archaeological Expedition to Motya of Sapienza University of Rome. The island of Motya in the Marsala Lagoon is a privileged observatory for the study of the Phoenician culture of the West due of its strategic importance since the foundation of the colony. This is a multidisciplinary research that involves also archaeometric and chemical analyses, for dating purposes, provenance, and functional determination of ceramics. Funding by three Post-doc research grants: 1) “Archaeometric documentation and 3D stratigraphy, cataloguing and scientific classification of ceramic materials of Motya (TP)”. Post-doc research grant (category B), type II, funded by the Progetto di Ricerca di Ateneo Grande Scavo Mozia 2017. 2). “Motya Living Lab.” Post-doc Research Fellowship cat. B, Type II funded by the Grande Scavo Mozia 2012, Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Letters, Department of Sciences of Antiquity. 3) “MOZIA SCENARIO - WI-FI for Advanced Technological Research”, in collaboration with the Department for the Digitization of Public Administration and the Technological Innovation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the G. Whitaker Foundation, the Regional Department for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, 2011-2012 ". Post-doc Research Fellowship cat. B, type II for Curator of the Ceramic Lab. Project co-financed by the Department of Sciences of Antiquity of Sapienza University of Rome. This work produced two books and 15 papers on refereed journals up to now [X - Publications nos. 1-3, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 23, 25-28, 30, 33, 34, 36].
Phoenician religious traditions: transmission and transformation. I dealt with the study of Phoenician religious traditions and syncretic phenomena generated by the contact between these and the various cultural components, mainly Greek and Indigenous, in the Punic colonies of the West. I dealt with the Phoenician and Punic sacred architecture and cultural installations. These researches have been presented at international conferences. They have been the subject of articles published in national and international journals [X - Publications nos. 9, 20-22, 29, 31, 32, 35].
Red Slip Tracking in Ancient Mediterranean. Archaeometric study of the Red Slip coating pf Phoenician vessels from the principal sites od Phoenicia and West Mediterranean (i.e. Sidon, Carthage, Motya, Sulky, Cadiz, Mogador) in collaboration with MAM - Archaeological Mission at Motya (Sapienza University of Rome), Universidad de Cádiz, l’Universitat de València, University of Sassari, Institut National du Patrimoine di Tunisi, CNIS - Sapienza University of Rome. Archaeometric analyses are carried on by Prof. Caterina De Vito, Dr. Lucilla Fabrizi (Dept. of Earth Sicences - Sapienza University of Rome) and Prof. Antonio Doménech-Carbó (Universitat de València) [X - Publications nos. 6, 18].
Cooking pot as an indicator of cultural relations between Levantine peoples in Late Bronze and Iron Ages. Origins, diffusion and typological development. This research concerns the ceramics productions of common use, mainly kitchen ware, considered as privileged observatory for the study of the cultural relationships, of the migrations, of the ethnic identity of the Eastern Mediterranean populations between the second and the first millennium B.C. The research has been published in several articles and in one monography [X - Publications Nos. 4, 10, 24, 37, 39].
Pomegranate International: Invitation to contribute the chapter “History and distribution” to an upcoming book on “The Pomegranate: Botany, Production and Uses” to be published by CABI (www.cabi.org) [X - Publications Nos. 5, 7].
“In Search of Ancient Stuffs”: photosensors in archaeological research (within the project “Mozia - Isola Laboratorio”)] used for chronological and functional attribution of ceramic finds, currently in progress and conducted in collaboration with the CISA3 (UCSD, Prof. Th. Levy), the Departments of Informatics and Chemistry of Sapienza. Within the same research line, the experimentation of the SENSOR KNOTS implemented in Motya with the collaboration of the Computer Science Department of Sapienza, included in the ITC PON-Sicilia 2007/2013.3).
